Newark & Sherwood District Group
CPRE, Newark & Sherwood District Group is actively engaged in helping to protect the countryside and in ensuring development is appropriate through influencing regional and local government planning policies and decisions.
In the past it has commented to the relevant authority on:
- Telecommunication masts
- Green belt protection
- Sand, gravel and gypsum extraction
- Housing developments
- Wind turbine 'farms'
It has also worked with the local Council on the preparation of a new Development Framework Document, and in the review of the Nottingham and Nottinghamshire Joint Structure Plan, making representations to the Examination in Public.
Members review local planning weekly and make regular representations. The Group actively seeks to prevent unnecessary or unwarranted development that may harm the countryside in Newark & Sherwood and is proud of its campaigning achievements.
If you are concerned about the loss of countryside, the pressure for development outside the urban areas, and inappropriate development in rural locations, then you can have a voice through CPRE.
Community involvement is encouraged through CPRE's County competitions in which the Newark and Sherwood District Group feature strongly.
Report for Newark & Sherwood District Group for 2007
The Planning Sub-Group has met through the year to discuss and agree responses to significant planning applications, a number of consultation documents and submissions to Planning Inquiries. We constantly review local, regional and national planning issues. Each week we monitor the Newark & Sherwood Planning Lists and comment where appropriate.
We submitted evidence to the Planning Inspectorate supporting the District Council's refusal to allow a development of 68 dwellings together with the demolition of a boathouse and wall at a listed building at Millgate, Newark and appeared at the subsequent Public Inquiry. Unfortunately the Appeal was upheld by the Inspector. We were more successful in opposing an appeal to build on land outside the building line in Fiskerton Road, Southwell, and in successfully objecting to applications to build an hotel at the White Post, Farnsfield and polytunnels and an agricultural development at Greaves Lane, Edingley.
Having made strong representations to the County Council following its’ decision to close Fiskerton Household Waste and Re-cycling Centre near Southwell, and supported the local campaign to keep the site open, we were delighted when the County Council reversed its decision and agreed to keep the Centre open until 2012.
We continue to take an active role in the Local Strategic Partnership process through membership of three Issues Groups: Environment, Housing and Transport, and Economic Development, and are awaiting the next stage of the Newark & Sherwood Local Development Framework process with which we have been closely involved.
CPRE at county and regional level has spent much time this year preparing and submitting evidence for the Examination in Public of the Draft Regional Spatial Strategy for the East Midlands, which will replace all the County Structure Plans in the future. The District Group had already studied the implications for Newark and Sherwood last autumn, and our comments had been forwarded with those of the rest of Branch to be part of the Regional Group submission. We were invited to give evidence on a range of issues including our concerns about the Newark Growth Point, and the proposals for a large increase in housing allocations for the District. We now all await the Panel's report and recommendations.
As usual during the year we have continued to promote CPRE through giving talks, helping with displays, replying to requests for information and advice on planning matters and supporting other local groups.
